Tucked in the middle of an old strip of century-longtime storefronts that grace the south side of HWY 290, the main artery of Carmine, sits the Standish Grain Co. Antiques, a namesake homage to the owner's, Cammy Standish, family historical business.
"Sweet!" was my first thought as I pulled up to the quaint and inviting line of shops, most of which are now opened with fine craft and antiques. The face of Standish Grain Co. Antiques was done in buttery yellow with classic black and white with traditional shop display and door windows. Calling to me from behind these windows was Cammy's eye for style, which drew me in quickly with excitement. Greeting me from every direction as I walked through the door were eclectic vignetted collections of primitive antique furnishing boasting that perfect patina only old paint and age can truly create. Fantastic antique architectural and iron pieces, a pair of incredible old chippy white painted concrete lions, garden seating and fun little finds were mixed in to sublime satisfaction.
Mirrors, art and oddities filled the walls in-between old cabinets ready for purchase. There was a nice selection of antique side tables of varying sizes, seating and lighting. A fantastic antique door surround formed a display towards the center of the shop standing watch over an old farm table done nicely with bench and chair seating. Teasing of the upcoming Spring sang out from a large collective vignette of furnishings, most of which were long ago painted in varying and entertainingly mixable pinks, and a perfect old chippy black and turquoise porch swing hung near a window with old pots and a garden table sat inviting below. I wanted to grab a book and glass of iced tea and be still there a while. The shop was a nice size, not overwhelmingly large as many of these old storefronts are, and the presence and amount of quality merchandise is hugely enjoyable! Shopping was easy and fun and the buying was great!
As delightful as her shop, Cammy is adorable, honest, hilarious and humble, completely naive at times to her own abilities, and I wanted to make that 2 glasses of iced tea and enjoy her company. She works hard to find the right pieces at the right prices and reflects this to her clients as the merchandise is priced to move quickly, and it does! The ever changing inventory provides the opportunity to frequent here as you never know what treasures you may find makes Standish Grain Co. Antiques one of the must see shops on my list.
